If you’re reading this blog post, it’s because you’ve been interested in Jesse’s adventures on the Crystal World Cruise 2010 and you’re hoping to find an update.

Dad has been under the weather for a couple of weeks, and despite our hopes to the contrary, it became clear to the Crystal Serenity medical staff and our own doctor in Texas that it would be best if Dad ended the cruise and returned home this week. Dad left the ship around 10:00a ship time Monday morning and is now under doctor’s care in a hospital in Goa, India. Even though his health issues unfortunately hindered his ability to continue on the cruise, he is doing well. As a precaution, we have requested an air ambulance transport via MedJetAssist to the hospital at home. We’re working through the final details and hope to have him home in the next 48 to 72 hours.

Throughout Dad’s experience, I have had one recurring thought. How fortunate I am – and we all are – to be a part of the Virtuoso family.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 313px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_3GUnH5VgJyg/S4_jdIxHi1I/AAAAAAAAAnk/lbRRvc6RNAU/s320/resize+ship+surgeon+and+staff.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5444820564223429458" />Crystal Cruises has provided support far beyond anything I could have expected. Dad’s been telling you about the programs and entertainment on and off the ship, but I must say the support they provide in the background, out of the spotlights, is truly amazing. I commend the ship surgeon, Ralph Sorbris, MD, PhD, and his team of medical professionals, Carmen Petricia, Dragana Simovic, and Sarah Kennedy, for providing Dad with expert medical care, and more importantly, doing so with a thoroughly human touch. Their bedside manner played such an important role, and I will be forever grateful for the warmth and compassion they showed to Dad.

Virtuoso On-Sites are regularly called upon to provide amazing life experiences for Virtuoso Members’ clients because they are the best in the industry. And yet they are also among the first to step up when plans go awry, emergencies arise, or illness cuts a dream trip short. Dad was excited to have already made plans to visit with Shanti Kohli of Amber Tours while he was to be in India. When she learned of his need to disembark and go home, Shanti mobilized her team in Goa to provide transportation and support for Dad and my assistant, Melody, who is traveling with him. Shanti also reached out personally to her close family friends at East West Rescue, the leading medical assistance and evacuation company in India. She went even further to travel from Mumbai to Goa to personally meet Dad and Melody, liaise with the hospital and East West Rescue, and stay by “Uncle Jesse’s” side to provide comfort and companionship. This time it was Amber Tours who stepped up to the plate, but I know beyond doubt every Virtuoso On-Site has the same focus on excellence and personal service.

MedJetAssist provides medical transport emergency services to travelers worldwide. A Virtuoso preferred partner, MedJetAssist offers a valuable service to travelers – medical evacuation from a hospital anywhere in the world to the hospital of the traveler’s choice. I believe in their product so much that Virtuoso has a company membership providing coverage for Virtuoso employees traveling internationally.

The Park Hyatt Goa Resort and Spa, a new addition to the Virtuoso family, took room service to a new level - they delivered food to Melody and Jesse in the hospital. They also made Melody feel very welcome by giving her the opportunity to briefly leave the hospital and relax in one of their amazing rooms.

We have been celebrating the 20th anniversary of Virtuoso’s Voyager Club during this world cruise. The keystone of Voyager Club is the hosts we provide onboard to assist Virtuoso cruise passengers as needed throughout the cruise. Brian and Judy Robertson are four-times proven world cruise hosts and gave Dad both assistance and friendly support, especially during his last few days on the ship. Brian is a veteran blogger, too, and I invite you to follow his blog for “the rest of the story” on this Crystal World Cruise 2010.

Thanks, Dad, for letting me post on your blog. And thank you, Virtuoso preferred suppliers, Members, friends – family all – for your love and support, and for letting us be a part of your lives.

If you would like to send a note to Jesse or comment on this post, please address your message to help@virtuoso.com.

Warmest personal regards,
Matthew

Day 44: en Route to Cochin, India

We are to arrive in Cochin, India in the morning. On this seven day crossing we have had the most beautiful weather; the water has been almost like glass.

Today has been a very full day and one that I have really enjoyed. After breakfast, it was off to get my hair cut in the Crystal Salon and I was prepped and ready for my very own photo shoot.
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 214px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_3GUnH5VgJyg/S4fOEQ2cLqI/AAAAAAAAAm0/Sp9r4aOTlBo/s320/Sophocles+011.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5442545247338639010" />

Sophocles Alexiou has been on board since Capetown and will depart in Mumbai. Sophocles took the time to make me feel comfortable and very relaxed. He picked some really beautiful locations on the ship of which there are plenty so today I strolled all over the ship in my tux and felt like quite the movie star.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 269px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_3GUnH5VgJyg/S4fOwcqoApI/AAAAAAAAAnE/r8yvRZk24NY/s400/Sophocles+029.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5442546006424552082" />
As if all of that wasn’t enough, I ended my day with a massage.
Life aboard Crystal is superb!

Day38: Zanzibar

A Place Called Zanzibar – In a Country Called Tanzania

“What serious traveler has not longed to wade ashore in the warm waters surrounding Zanzibar? Who among us has not dreamt of walking in the paths of Sultans draped in rich robes, or in the shadows of one of his harems of concubines?” That quote is from Karyn Planett, who writes for Reflections, was what I read on the morning we arrived in Zanzibar and it is the perfect quote.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 214px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_3GUnH5VgJyg/S4D0PltA5hI/AAAAAAAAAms/XG--iik9Y1M/s320/Zanzibar+053.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5440616898519688722" />
Upon arriving you see the local fishermen in their small sailing boats weaving in between the tankers and visiting yachts. The buildings have an Arabian flair with ornate doors; the market is filled with vendors selling everything from spices, fish, and poultry to tennis shoes. You can explore its maze of streets and find a wonder at each turn.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 214px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_3GUnH5VgJyg/S4Dz4XSjY-I/AAAAAAAAAmk/6i8qrUd6gdg/s320/Zanzibar+063.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5440616499513615330" />

A church in Stone Town commemorates the slave trade and it is said that the heart of Livingstone was buried there before his body was returned to England.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 214px; height: 320px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_3GUnH5VgJyg/S4DziqME7sI/AAAAAAAAAmc/giVTk6CRIOo/s320/Zanzibar+082.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5440616126629605058" />

The slaves were chained together and after arriving by boat from lands across the sea were placed into a holding cell until they were sold. If they could not be sold for whatever reason, they were killed. There is a beautiful sculpture that is in memory of the lives that were sold and for those that were killed.

Zanzibar was the home of Sultans and their wives. One such man was Sultan Barghash. He was the rich man in this town and according to local history had 100 concubines and 5 wives. When he was not too tired, he built Beit el-Ajaib otherwise known as the “House of Wonders.” It was the first house to have electricity on this island and is still the largest of Zanzibar’s many structures. Today it is a museum and visitors can explore it from top to bottom.

Zanzibar was once the most important port in the Western Indian Ocean. According to an Arab proverb, “when a flute is played all Africa east of the Lakes must dance.” I can see why.

Day 37: Buffet

We have been at sea for several days sailing to Zanzibar since leaving Durban. These ladies and gentlemen are the best. They always have a smile on their face and a cheerful greeting for you. I spoke with one gentleman this evening that is sailing with Crystal as a staff member for the first time. He said he is very excited and that being able to work with a great crew and meet guests from all over the world was very thrilling. He was one of twenty-five that were chosen to work for Crystal out of 200 hundred applicants. He said his mother and father were very proud, and I can see why, he is outstanding.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 214px; height: 320px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_3GUnH5VgJyg/S3w5e6AI1DI/AAAAAAAAAic/XxjBrlqaWrA/s320/Lunch+6.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5439285653085410354" />

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 214px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_3GUnH5VgJyg/S3w5eWpLdwI/AAAAAAAAAiU/Eq05431SjEw/s320/Lunch+7.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5439285643593873154" />

The crew seems to be there in the morning and also in the evening and they are consistently friendly and happy. As always, Crystal had many activities to participate in from enjoying piano music in the Crystal Cove to sculpting alabaster on the Lido Deck. There is never a shortage of activities or entertainment and they are all top notch. Each day we receive a daily printing placed in our rooms called Reflections. In Reflections, you will find all the information you could ever want to know about the day aboard Crystal’s World Cruise on the Serenity.

Brian and Judy Robertson, the Voyager Club Host and Hostess, planned a wonderful cocktail reception for the Virtuoso Voyager Club. The boat has been in heavy swells so it has been entertaining to walk about!

Once again Crystal Cruises has exceeded my expectations. I was having breakfast with a fellow traveler and commented that I have never met such wonderful people who know what you want even before you want it. This crew is the best. If you have never sailed with Crystal then you cannot begin to imagine the service and friendships you are missing!

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 114px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_3GUnH5VgJyg/S3UuTHcdWVI/AAAAAAAAAgc/VnW5WfzFjTU/s320/Cape+Town+020810+001.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5437303031070546258" />

We are docked in Port Elizabeth and I have decided to have a free day. I am treating myself to some wonderful spa services, looking forward to a great dinner with wonderful entertainment afterwards. The crew on this ship is really the very best.

I promised that I would tell you about Simon’s Town famous canine. I really enjoyed the history I learned from our guide Chris. One of the best stories he shared with me was about Just Nuisance.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 224px; height: 400px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_3GUnH5VgJyg/S3Up_DBs77I/AAAAAAAAAgU/8D0pj0v5Q4Y/s400/Just+N.bmp" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5437298288240684978" />

Just Nuisance was the only dog ever to be officially enlisted in the Royal Navy. He was a Great Dane who from 1939-44 served at HMS Afrikander, a Royal Navy shore establishment in Simon's Town, South Africa. He died in 1944 and was buried with full military honors.

Although the exact date of Just Nuisance's birth is not known, it is usually stated that he was born on 1 April 1937 in Rondebosch, a suburb of Cape Town. He was sold to Benjamin Chaney who later moved to Simon's Town to run the United Services Institute (USI). Just Nuisance quickly became popular with the patrons of the institute, mostly the ratings who would feed him snacks and take him for walks. He began to follow them back to the naval base and dockyards, where he would lie on the decks of ships that were moored up in dock, normally at the top of the gangplanks. Since he was a large dog even for a Great Dane, he was almost 6.6 ft tall when standing on his hind legs, he presented a sizable obstacle for those trying to board or disembark and he became affectionately known as Nuisance.

Nuisance was allowed to roam freely and, following the sailors, he began to take day trips by train as far afield as Cape Town, 22 miles away. Despite the seamen's attempts to conceal him, the conductors would put him off the trains as soon as he was discovered. This did not cause him any problems, as he would wait for the next train or walk to another station where he would board the next train that came along. Amused travelers would occasionally offer to pay his fares, but the railway company eventually warned Chaney that Nuisance would have to be put down unless he was kept under control to prevent him boarding the trains or had his fares paid.

The news that Nuisance may be put down spurred many of the sailors and locals to write to the Navy pleading for something to be done. Although somebody offered to buy him a season ticket, the Navy instead decided to officially enlist him; as a member of the armed forces he would receive free rail travel, so the fare-dodging would no longer be a problem. It was a good idea: for the next years, he would be a morale booster for the troops serving in World War II.

He was enlisted on 25 August 1939: his surname was entered as "Nuisance" and rather than leaving the forename blank he was christened "Just". His trade was listed as "Bonecrusher" and his religious affiliation as "Scrounger", although it was later altered to the more charitable "Canine Divinity League (Anti-Vivisection)". To allow him to receive rations and because of his longstanding unofficial service he was promoted from Ordinary Seaman to Able Seaman. Like all new sailors, he underwent a medical examination that he duly passed and was declared fit for active duty. The proper enlistment forms were filled in and he signed them with a paw mark. Just Nuisance was now a bona-fide member of the Navy and, as such, he expected all the benefits that that brought - he started sleeping on sailors' beds - his long frame fully stretched out with his head comfortably placed on the pillow. One of the seamen was allocated to ensure that Just Nuisance was regularly washed and he often appeared at parades wearing his seaman's hat. Sailors being sailors there was the odd fight. Just Nuisance did not like his sailor friends to fight each other. If he came across a fight he would quickly put a stop to it by standing up on his hind legs and pushing his huge paws against their chests. After a short while he was promoted from 'Ordinary Seaman' to 'Able Seaman', which entitled him to naval rations! Just Nuisance was equally at home on any ship that called in at the port, and was loved by everybody who met him though his main interest was only with other ranks.

He never went to sea, but fulfilled a number of roles ashore. He continued to accompany sailors on train journeys and escorted them back to base when the pubs closed. While many of his functions were of his own choosing, he also appeared at many promotional events, including his own "wedding" to another Great Dane, Adinda. Adinda produced five pups as a result, two of which were auctioned off in Cape Town to raise funds for the war effort.

Nuisance's service record was not exemplary. Aside from the offenses of travelling on the trains without his free pass, being absent without leave, losing his collar and refusing to leave the pub at closing time, his record shows that he was sentenced to have all bones removed for seven days for sleeping in an improper place: one of the Petty Officer's beds. He also fought with the mascots of ships that put in at Simon's Town, resulting in the deaths of at least two of them.

Nuisance had been involved in a car accident which had caused thrombosis which was gradually paralyzing him, so on 1 January 1944 he was discharged from the Navy. His condition continued to deteriorate; on 1 April 1944 he was taken to Simon's Town Naval Hospital where on the advice of the naval veterinary surgeon, he was put to sleep. The next day he was taken to Klaver Camp, where his body was draped with a Royal Naval White Ensign and he was buried with full naval honours, including a gun salute and the playing of the Last Post. A simple granite headstone marks his grave which is on the top of the hill at the former signals centre. A statue was erected in Jubilee Square in Simon's Town to commemorate his life.

The Simon's Town Museum has a room dedicated to his story, and since 2000 there has been an annual parade of Great Danes from which a lookalike is selected

Tomorrow: At Sea.

Day 31: And I think to myself...

Today we had the good fortune of having Chris McWilliams, thanks to Andre Botha of Trans African Safaris, as our guide once again. Chris is a wonderful young man that really knows how to take you on a tour of the area so rich in history and with so many wonders to be discovered.

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 267px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_3GUnH5VgJyg/S3MZoNNqoQI/AAAAAAAAAfM/WoVsp1QxjIU/s400/RS+Chris+Jesse+Cape+Hope+020910.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5436717353698763010" />

We began our day on a drive to The Cape of Good Hope (Afrikaans:Kaap die Goeie Hoop,) is a rocky out cropping on the Atlantic coast of South Africa.
There is a very common misconception that the Cape of Good Hope is the southern tip of Africa, because it was once believed to be the dividing point between the Atlantic and Indian Oceans. In fact, the southernmost point is Cape Agulhas ("ah-GOOL-yuss"), about 150 kilometers or 90 miles as we call them to the east-southeast. The Atlantic and Indian oceans meet at the point where the warm-water Agulhas current meets the cold-water Benguela current and turns back on itself.
When following the African coastline from the equator, however, the Cape of Good Hope marks the psychologically important point where one begins to travel more eastward than southward. Thus the first rounding of the cape in 1488 by Portuguese explorer Bartolomeu Dias was a major milestone in the attempts by the Portuguese to establish direct trade relations with the Far East. Our wonderful guide Chris explained that at many times you can see people at The Cape celebrating with champagne and dancing and you know they have been traveling Africa and are at their turning point.

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 267px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_3GUnH5VgJyg/S3MaXRNI-3I/AAAAAAAAAfU/-tG66MQ1xoU/s400/RS+Misc+Cape+Hope+Wate.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5436718162224151410" />

As we drove to The Cape, the weather was just beautiful. Chris pointed out that the original lighthouse on the cape was not always functional due to the clouds surrounding it on a regular basis so another lighthouse was erected on the actual point. The weather was amazing and we were able to get off some great photos and then very quickly the mist came in. One moment it was clear and in the next moment we were completely shrouded in mist. Once again, Africa showed us that it had saved the very best for us!

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 267px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_3GUnH5VgJyg/S3MasKs4XvI/AAAAAAAAAfc/cy5vOdr4xC0/s400/Cape+Town+020810+024.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5436718521255485170" />

We stopped off for some wonderful grilled calamari at a local restaurant called the Black Marlin. It is a quaint restaurant located in Simon’s Town and has earned a reputation for its food, wine and attentive service. Chris told me that at any given time the baboons would actually come up and join you for dinner, he did say not to worry about them stealing your cooked fish; they actually liked the bread better. A shower came in and luckily or unluckily, however you want to look at it, baboons prefer not to eat their bread in the rain.

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 267px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_3GUnH5VgJyg/S3MchaFHcJI/AAAAAAAAAfs/drSSqWHVBmE/s400/RS+Baboon+Cape+Hope.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5436720535428362386" />

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 267px; height: 400px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_3GUnH5VgJyg/S3MbChyC3OI/AAAAAAAAAfk/C6J9K5wiSh8/s400/Cape+Town+020810+019.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5436718905408281826" />

We finished our drive with a tour of Simon’s Town where I saw some wonderful ironwork. It had some very interesting history…which I will save for another day. You will have to hear about the famous canine from Simon’s Town.
Back on the ship this evening the captain announced that we would be departing Cape Town. The tug boats arrived to escort us out of the harbor, we cast off the lines with Louie Armstrong singing “..I see skies of blue, clouds of white, bright blessed days, dark sacred nights…””

So, tonight as I am rocked to sleep with the gentle swaying of the ship ..I'll think to myself…what a wonderful world.

Tomorrow, a day at sea.

Day 30: Cape Town and a changing of the guard

Today Donna departed the ship and Melody came aboard. While they were busy settling Melody into her new home for the next 30 days, I enjoyed the simple pleasures of life aboard Serenity. I did try something new - acupuncture. The possibilities aboard this ship are many and varied!

This evening there were many new faces aboard Serenity. Quite a few passengers have joined us for the next portions of the world cruise. The lecture this afternoon by Leo Thorsness focused on the amazing stories of some of the winner of the Medal of Honor.

Crystal went all out this evening by presenting a Variety Showtime featuring the many performers they brought onboard for this crossing. From dance, to singing, to trumpet, to flute, to classical piano, to comedy, there was such a variety everyone was sure to hear something special to them.

Tonight the Serenity is having a Super Bowl party with kickoff at 1:25 AM. It’s a good thing we’re not arriving in Cape Town until 1:00 PM tomorrow. Our original arrival was scheduled for 8:00 AM but to avoid rougher seas, the Captain took us on a slightly longer tack and that has added a few hours to our time at sea. There have been no complaints, though, as we’ve had a good crossing and good weather the entire time.

Tomorrow: Cape Town, South Africa.

Day 27: At Sea

This crossing has been quite relaxing. How relaxing? Last night I forgot to move my clock forward, and when I realized that this morning, I wasn’t worried. My morning went at an easy pace and after a light lunch, I attended Dr. Keyser’s lecture on the tragic life of Judy Garland.

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 80px; height: 60px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_3GUnH5VgJyg/S28tpD98dRI/AAAAAAAAAas/vMG1PFRVYmM/s400/judy+garland.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5435613458722485522" />The lecture ended with a video of her in the familiar hobo costume singing a heart-wrenching performance of “Somewhere Over the Rainbow.” I remember meeting her once many years ago at a charity event. I’m glad I got to see that video today. It was surprisingly moving for everyone in the audience.

I took day off from gym and spa and enjoyed a simple, quiet afternoon. After tonight’s formal farewell dinner (for the passengers who are disembarking at Cape Town), the Captain hosted a formal reception. The highlight of the reception was the performance of the World Cruise Chorus. The audience especially appreciated their singing of the South Africa song Cho Cho Losa.

Tomorrow: At Sea.

Day 26: At Sea

We entered much rougher water today, and the ship has been moving quite a bit. It was a test of their balance and skill, and they passed the test with flying colors.

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_3GUnH5VgJyg/S2ysCDf5LZI/AAAAAAAAAaU/yAB34kMpufo/s400/resize+gotta+dance+2.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5434908001628138898" />I’ve added this picture so you can see how close the audience is to the performers in the Galaxy Lounge. There’s not a bad seat in the house.

At 9:00 every morning, the Captain addresses the passengers. It’s a State of the Serenity kind of message. At the end of his announcements each day, he shares a message for the day. Today’s message: If you’re not having fun, you’re not doing it right. Well, I am having fun, and it’s because Crystal does it right!

Tomorrow: at sea, two days until Cape Town.

Day 25: At Sea

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_3GUnH5VgJyg/S2tHgpfItpI/AAAAAAAAAYM/w8z_z8nzbYE/s320/resize+jazz+brunch+jesse.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5434516001570469522" />The Jazz Brunch Buffet was held today in the dining room. Yesterday, Dr. Keyser continued his series on great American entertainers. His subject was Gene Kelly. Dr. Keyser actually sang and performed a bit of softshoe to get the crowd in the mood.

Today, Rex Ziek returned for part 3 of his series on James Cook. In the late 1700’s, Captain Cook actually sailed the very waters we are now traveling. His vessel, the Resolution, was no doubt a stark contrast to the luxury of the Serenity, but it carried him and his crew through the Atlantic, around Antarctica, throughout the South Pacific and then back home to England in a journey that lasted almost 3 years.

By the way, if someone happens to miss a lecture, no worries since Crystal provides for its passengers down to the smallest detail. Lectures are rebroadcast on dedicated television channels, so everyone has a chance to hear them, if not in person, then later in the comfort of their staterooms.

Crystal Cruises has also brought aboard for our sea days a number of special entertainers. Tonight a young recording artist with a beautiful soprano voice, Fiona Jessica Wilson, sang for us in the Galaxy Lounge. She sang opera, pops and everything in between. Following her performance, I went with friends to the Avenue Saloon on deck 6, where we listened to live piano music and visited until closing time.

Join us on the Crystal Serenity

We are a mere 23 days into the Crystal World Cruise 2010, and it is not too late for travelers to join us for the upcoming segments. I have told you about the activities I’ve chosen, but there are many more I have not mentioned. If I were to set out to experience each and every option Crystal offers on the world cruise, I feel sure it would take several cruises to do so. Take art, for example. Art instructors offer several classes in such varied mediums as needlepoint, origami, jewelry making, painting, and scrapbooking. Fine art pieces are displayed daily in the Crystal Cove on deck 5. The Art Director is available to discuss the pieces and personally negotiate the purchase of the piece that catches your eye. The Crystal Trio provides live music during the noon hour, and this creates a relaxed atmosphere for viewing the art works up close.
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_3GUnH5VgJyg/S2hxegdBsiI/AAAAAAAAAV0/jzQsIOyJ1o8/s320/resize+trio+lobby.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5433717719344198178" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_3GUnH5VgJyg/S2hxsdTBAoI/AAAAAAAAAWE/XoRr8eHE8Vo/s320/resize+big+screen+lobby.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5433717959015072386" />Nearby on deck 5, I took a few minutes to view the large flat screen TV showing real-time location and ambient conditions on Serenity. Seeing the location in latitude and longitude along with the ship speed in knots, I was reminded of my early days at sea and the many cruises I have taken over the years. And yet none was as pleasant and enjoyable as the Crystal Serenity World Cruise.
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_3GUnH5VgJyg/S2hxeaPiN2I/AAAAAAAAAVs/gJMe7dFIazI/s320/resize+rex+ziak+jesse.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5433717717676996450" />One of the lectures I attended today was Part 2 of the life of James Cook. The lecturer, Rex Ziak, drew a large and eager audience. He uses post-it notes to mark the journeys of this expert sailor and navigator. A master storyteller, Rex left us hanging by saying, “And that is the subject of my next lecture.” I’ll be there to hear part 3!

After the formal “French” dinner this evening, I attended the Crystal Society reception where several people were recognized for their multiple Crystal cruises. There is a true feeling of family among the passengers and crew, and this is nowhere more clearly seen than when returning passengers and officers celebrate their milestone cruises together.

Following the reception, I lingered in the Palm Court on deck 12 to visit with friends. What a pleasant way to end a day at sea.

Tomorrow: at sea.

Day 21: At Sea

Today was quiet, and it seemed everyone onboard adopted a relaxed schedule. Thanks to the wide variety of lecturers brought onboard by Crystal, I now look forward to the daily lectures. Today’s lectures included the life of Eva “Evita” Peron, the political history of South Africa in the 20th century, and African wildlife. I attended all 3, had a session at the gym and spa, and generally settled in for the next several days at sea. Memories of last night’s gala celebration are still fresh on my mind, and it was the topic of conversation everywhere on the ship today.

Tomorrow: at sea.

Day 20: Buenos Aires, Argentina

A great expanse of cargo containers were on the dock on both sides of the Serenity in the Buenos Aires port. Shuttle busses transporting passengers from the ship to the terminal drove past mountains of containers perfectly stacked 5 and 6 high.

Virtuoso On-Site Mai 10 provided an expert tour guide, Flavio, and a driver for a private tour of the city this morning. I have not seen Buenos Aires in many years, and was happy to see many familiar sights as well as new developments and renovations of older buildings throughout the city.

We stopped for coffee in the Gran Café Tortoni, the oldest café in Buenos Aires dating to 1858.

A site of special interest for me was the polo fields. Perhaps the next time I visit Buenos Aires it will be during the polo season, today, however, I was content to simply look out across the fields.

I enjoyed a very pleasant lunch in the oldest tennis club in Buenos Aires as the special guests of Jose and Marita of Mai 10. For dessert I tried a local favorite, ice cream made from dulce de leche. Jose and Marita drove us back to the ship in time to rest and change before the party scheduled for early evening.

And what a party it was! Billed as the gala celebration dinner of the 20th anniversary of Virtuoso Voyager Club and set against the backdrop of the original tango club, the dinner and tango show had already captured our imaginations. However, none of us could have imagined the delights that awaited us thanks to the expert planning and attention to every detail by Mai 10. As we arrived by coach, we could see a street party coming to life with characters of the romantic bygone era of the early 1900’s when tango was at its zenith.

Tango music filled the air as we watched a couple dance, oblivious to the commotion being made by the other characters, including a very “friendly” young lady. The street had actually been closed off by special arrangement for our event. Two period automobiles marked the far end of the street.

The party moved inside El Viejo Almacen where we enjoyed a delicious meal in the quaint historic club. Following our final sips of espresso, the lights dimmed and the magic began. We were treated to every aspect of the tango – the dance, the costumes, the music, and the singing. It was nothing short of spectacular! We returned to Serenity in a buzz of excitement, recalling the events of the evening with great delight. It was a truly unforgettable celebration of life, Virtuoso and Voyager Club style.

Serenity departed Buenos Aires at midnight to begin our 8-day crossing to Cape Town.

Tomorrow: at sea.

Day 19: Montevideo, Uruguay

We had beautiful weather for our visit to Montevideo, compliments of Crystal Cruises. The view from Lido Café on deck 12 was a spectacular preview of what was waiting for us outside. We walked through the Plaza Independencia in the center of the city and stopped briefly here and there throughout the downtown area. Then we drove through beautiful neighborhoods with tree lined streets.

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_3GUnH5VgJyg/S2OFuvFGiJI/AAAAAAAAASs/hsRLJDVHmRQ/s320/resize+barbeque.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5432332613497292946" /> Lunch in an outside restaurant at the Mercado del Puerto gave us a taste of local cuisine including paella and Uruguay’s specialty, barbeque. After lunch we drove along the waterfront past beautiful beaches and high rise apartment buildings.

At the farthest point on our drive, we stopped at a small park on a point and posed for a picture with our guide, Patricia, and driver, Julio.

Because Crystal had a special dinner this evening for their passengers on the full world cruise, we ended our tour mid-afternoon, and returned “home” to the Serenity.

Tomorrow: Buenos Aires and the Virtuoso Voyager Club 20th Anniversary Gala Dinner.

Day 18: At Sea

The weather has been great throughout the cruise. Both yesterday and today gave us nothing but calm seas, blue skies, and comfortable temperatures. Cruise Director Rick Spath told us tonight the weather in Montevideo tomorrow will be fabulous.

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_3GUnH5VgJyg/S2IsdwOMs1I/AAAAAAAAARk/Lcr52E207os/s320/resize+jesse+dr+keyser.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5431952990234522450" />I look forward to the daily lecture schedule. Today Dr. Herb Keyser told us about the life and career of Fanny Brice.

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_3GUnH5VgJyg/S2IseKfgloI/AAAAAAAAARs/v9v4mVwBqgs/s320/resize+jesse+v+party+jan+28.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5431952997286450818" />After dinner this evening, I enjoyed co-hosting the Voyager Club private cocktail party for this segment. The party was held in the back section of the Lido Café on deck 12, in the area many of us choose for breakfast every morning. It was a new location for the party, and with a little rearranging of the tables and chairs, it proved to be a popular location since we could see out the back of the ship to a spectacular view of the sea behind us.

To end the day on a high note (pun intended) we were entertained by “Cello Diva” Sarah Jessica Maer in the Stardust Club. I believe Crystal has brought onboard more lecturers and entertainers than passengers! The variety is unbelievable.

Tomorrow: Montevideo, Uruguay.

Day 17: At Sea

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_3GUnH5VgJyg/S2DnpMkTycI/AAAAAAAAAO8/z-rowTKoxGk/s320/resize+galaxy+lounge.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5431595845542988226" />I have never been on a ship that has as many things to do and experience as the Crystal Serenity. I attended three fascinating lectures today, all presented by very talented lecturers. The first lecture started with a brief overview of the history of world exploration which exploded in the 1400’s. The overview was setting the stage for the real star of the series of lectures on the Englishman James Cook who became an expert navigator and cartographer. The second lecture was an introduction to Montevideo, Uruguay, our next destination. For a complete change of pace, the third and final lecture of the day was a biography on the great entertainer, Al Jolson, complete with clips from his movie, The Jazz Singer.

I returned to the gym and spa today now that we are at sea again. After the formal dinner and captain’s reception, we went back to the Galaxy Lounge to see a second performance of “My Favorite Things.” I mentioned this production when I saw it a few days ago, but frankly, it was just as enjoyable the second time. The production ends with a flourish of elaborate costumes. This photo gives you an idea of the quality of the performance and a view of the stage in the Galaxy Lounge. Great entertainment in an elegant yet comfortable setting.

Tomorrow: at sea on our way to Montevideo, Uruguay.

Day 16: Rio

Another first for me – a trip to the top of Sugar Loaf, iconic symbol of Rio. It takes two gondola rides to reach the top. Christina, our guide, told us the gondola cars had been replaced about 6 months ago. At the mid-point stop there were retired gondolas on display. Next to one was the life-size statue of an early supporter of the gondola venture. He was a man of few words, but after a brief chat, I struck an agreement with my fellow entrepreneur and we closed the deal with a handshake.

The view from atop Sugar Loaf was spectacular, haze and all.

Mid-afternoon we said goodbye to our driver, Paolo, and our guide, Christina, and returned to our home away from home, Crystal Serenity.

Tomorrow: at sea headed for Montevideo, Uruguay.

Day 15: Rio de Janeiro, first day

Around 6:30 AM I joined about 100 of my fellow passengers on the forward decks to watch Crystal Serenity’s arrival into Rio de Janeiro. It was a spectacular scene and it was only the beginning of an amazing day. Virtuoso On-Site Matueté provided us a guide and driver for the day. We found them easily, jumped inside and off we went.

Our first stop was the Sambódromo, ground zero for Carnaval. There was much activity around the complex during our behind the scenes look. In a couple of weeks, the city, immersed in Carnaval, will pulsate with thousands of samba dancers and musicians parading down the center of the Sambódromo.

I’ve visited Rio 4 or 5 time before, but one thing I had never done was to visit the statue of Christ the Redeemer.

A popular way to get there is to ride the train up Corcovado, the mountain on which the statue stands. Near the top, a group called “Bom de Samba” started up and almost immediately the Brazilian tourists onboard joined in, singing and clapping to the beat.

In order to take this picture, our guide, Christina, laid back on the ground and framed the shot like a pro.

Our last stop of the afternoon was a visit to the Cathedral to see its magnificent stained-glass windows towering above us. Today I saw everything from tanker and cargo ships to off-shore drilling platforms to one small boat, maybe a local fisherman.

Chris Coxson, a marine biologist, has given several talks during the cruise, but today was the first time I sat in on one of his lectures. Today’s topic was whale songs and his presentation was full of actual recordings, some barely audible and some quite elaborate.

I joined an ad hoc table for four in the dining room for lunch. As always, there are many restaurant options aboard the ship, and part of the fun is deciding where to go. We then slipped up to Scoops on Lido deck for the perfect dessert – ice cream.

It was my pleasure to co-host a special event this afternoon along with Voyager Club Hosts Brian and Judy Robertson. Hyperion Knight, the talented pianist who is a favorite with those who have heard him before on Crystal Cruises, gave a special master class for the Virtuoso Voyager Club passengers and those who are enrolled in the Yamaha Passport to Music classes. For an hour or so he talked about what it takes to become a virtuoso in the art of music, and he performed a wide sampling of music from pops to classics. Part of the enjoyment for me was the unique setting, the Avenue Saloon on deck 6. It’s richly appointed with dark wood, painted ceilings and comfortable seating.

Coffee and tea in The Bistro and later, dinner in the Dining Room rounded out the day. The NFL playoff games are being shown on the big screen tonight in the Stardust Club. Crystal makes every moment count for their passengers. Since I don’t have a special interest in any of the teams playing and since tomorrow promises an early morning treat, I turned in a little early.

We’ve been told the sail in to Rio is an unforgettable experience. I’ll be top-side at sunrise to see Rio in all her splendor.

Day 13: At Sea

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_3GUnH5VgJyg/S1z7kjH46zI/AAAAAAAAAMk/IUz1rs_HE7o/s320/jesse+ken+rees.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5430491856024169266" />We are just two days away from Rio. Destination Lecturer Ken Rees gave an excellent talk on Brazil this morning. He has a very dry British wit, and grabbed our attention right away when he said Rio is the city with the largest statue and the smallest bikinis! I’ve been to Rio 4 or 5 times, but Ken added some new “must sees” to my wish list, including The Royal Library and the Monastery of St. Benedict where the chapel interior is almost completely covered in gold and gold leaf.

For this segment of the cruise, lectures have been held in the Hollywood Theatre on deck 6. The theatre sees a steady stream of audiences for the multiple lectures and movies offered daily.

During a few minutes of free time I scanned the original art pieces on display for sale in the Crystal Cove on deck 5. Piano music from the bar was as varied as the types of art on display - something for everyone.

Both yesterday and today I spent time in the training room at the top of the ship on deck 13 with my physical trainer, Ian, followed by a massage.

Tonight was another sensational show by the Crystal Ensemble of Singers and Dancers. “Curtain Call” featured songs and dance numbers from recent Broadway hits – Chicago, Evita, Les Miserables, Man of La Mancha, Cats, and Mamma Mia. Every member of this group gives 100% for every performance. I couldn’t begin to count their costume and scenery changes. Top notch all the way.

Tomorrow: at sea.

Day 12: At Sea

It seems everything on the schedule today was to my liking, so I did it all. After breakfast on Lido deck 12, my favorite breakfast spot, I attended two lectures back-to-back. Martin and Tanis Jordan, the couple who lectured a few days ago about their canoe trip in Surinam, came back to tell of their river expedition in Peru 30 years ago. It was another harrowing tale of high adventure, indigenous tribes and motorized canoes, called peki-pekis. Along the way they saw giant otters, green-winged macaws, river turtles, and beautiful butterflies. The river water was filled with piranhas and stingrays. They caught a giant toad that had kept them awake the night before with its strange sounds. One morning they awoke to find jaguar tracks near their hammocks. I have visited Peru several times but I never saw it this wild and untamed.

The second lecturer of the morning was Retired Brigadier General Halley who spoke this time on qualities of leadership. Both he and the Jordans are outstanding examples of the variety and quality of speakers Crystal brings in for its passengers.

Lunch was a real treat - an American Classic Buffet served around the Neptune Pool on deck 12. I topped off my lunch with hand-dipped sugar-free ice cream.

If all this was not enough, I also went to the gym, had a massage and attended two concerts today. West End Singing Star Emma Sinclair gave a wonderful performance this evening. It was a grand way to end the day.

Tomorrow: at sea on our way to Rio.

Day 11:  Fortaleza, Brazil

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_3GUnH5VgJyg/S1kprqIgxMI/AAAAAAAAALs/IUCX2dU2Xx8/s320/IMG_1803.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5429416655792948418" />Today was a day of new experiences, thanks to Crystal Cruises. Fortaleza was another new destination for me. Unfortunately, I felt a little under the weather, so I chose to stay onboard during our hours in port. Even on days in port, the Serenity staff makes sure their guests have a variety of options to make their day enjoyable. I spent part of the day exploring the ship and found the Sun Deck on deck 13. It was flooded with sunshine and from that vantage I could see Fortaleza’s high rise hotels and apartments sprawling down the coastline. The perfect chaser for a visit to the sun deck is a frozen treat, and I found it at Scoops Ice Cream Bar on Lido deck 12 – a refreshing scoop of sugar-free sherbet.

Tomorrow: at sea.

Day 10: At the Equator

Brian Robertson, my longtime friend and our Voyager Club host for the World Cruise, joined me for breakfast in the Lido Café this morning. I’ve previous crossed the Equator 7 or 8 times but never with such spectacle and revelry.

Lunch was a Mexican buffet. The tortilla soup was very good, but not as good as Mi Cocina’s in Fort Worth. After lunch and a massage, I had a little time off before the 5:00 musical show called Standing Room Only. Now that was a real show!

Dinner with the Chief Electrical Officer stretched on until we had to move our conversation to the lounge area outside the dining room. The conversation went from swapping stories about life and work at sea, to Harley Davidsons, to Machu picchu, to a funny story he told about driving from Houston to Albuquerque via Dallas/Ft. Worth. The long stretches of Texas highways, and the sheer length of the journey took this Dutchman by surprise. He said he could have crossed several countries in Europe in the time it took him to drive across Texas. That was no surprise to those of us from Texas and we all had a good laugh.

Tomorrow: Fortaleza, Brazil.

Day 9: At Sea

I took my time getting to breakfast this morning, and why not? After all, that’s one of the nice things about a day at sea. I like having breakfast in the Lido Café on Lido deck 12. The waiters knew my name after the first day, and now they greet me with, “Good morning, Mr. Jesse. Do you want green or English Breakfast tea today, Mr. Jesse?” Crystal Serenity has an amazing crew.

At 10:00, I attended a lecture by adventure travelers Martin and Tanis Jordan. They told of their canoe trip 30 years ago in Surinam, which used to be Dutch Guiana. I have had some exciting travel experiences, but nothing like the story they had to tell of an overturned canoe tossing them both into the river rapids, struggling to survive in the rushing water, making their way to a village on the river’s edge, and almost incredibly deciding to continue their journey after losing most of their food and other provisions. They did recover their camera and film and showed some amazing photos from their trip.

A massage and dinner rounded out my rather quiet day. After three ports of call, I found today’s pace to be quite relaxing.

Tomorrow: a day at sea. We will cross the Equator and there is a celebration planned for 11:15a. King Neptune and his Mermaid Queen will pay us a special visit.

Day 8: Devil’s Island, French Guiana

Devil’s Island is one of the destinations on the Crystal World Cruise that I have never visited before in all my years of travel. That is, until today! We had been warned that going ashore can be tricky due to weather and tide conditions, so I was happy the captain deemed it safe for us to take the short tender ride from our anchorage to the Isle Royale, one of the three islands that made up the French penal colony. It was very warm and humid and this small island has only a simple dirt road connecting the various buildings that made up the administration and minimum security sections of the penal colony. I have never seen so many coconut trees. I didn’t stay long, but it was long enough to say I’ve been there! And to prove it, I posed at the sign.

Crystal planned this excursion, and provided for our comfort there by setting up a cold water station (very popular) and placing tour guides strategically around the island to give short talks and answer questions. Ana, the first guide, met us as we walked off the pier. She pointed out we were just 7 miles from the mainland of French Guiana, which we could see in the distance.

The fellows in military uniform were rather casually watching the pier. Devil’s Island serves a purpose now as a tracking station for rockets taking satellites into space, so I assume they were there to protect that facility. After lift-off, the rockets fly directly over the islands. Even though the troops were friendly and happily posed for a picture with me, I was still relieved that they didn’t try to keep me there. I guess you could say I escaped Devil’s Island and lived to tell the tale.

The ship got underway again at 1:00 and after lunch and a massage, I spent the afternoon relaxing and enjoying life aboard the Crystal Serenity.

Tomorrow: a day at sea.

Day 7: At Sea

After breakfast I ventured out for the first time on the Lido deck 12 poolside. The fresh air and steady breeze was very refreshing. I sat in the shade for some time and thoroughly enjoyed the relaxing setting.

Just before lunch I visited the spa for a back and neck massage by Albert. I enjoyed it so much I scheduled another massage for tomorrow afternoon.

Brian and Judy Robertson, our Virtuoso Voyager Club Hosts, had told me under no circumstances should I miss the Sunday Grand Gala Buffet. I’m glad I took their advice. I have seen many lavish table scenes, but none could compare to what I saw today. To celebrate the occasion, I had a glass of champagne with my lunch of lobster and shrimp.

Tonight’s formal dinner put everyone in a festive mood. This reception is only for those who have been on one or more previous Crystal cruises. Special recognition was given to several returning guests. Quite a few have been on more than 100 cruises, and one guest counts this voyage as her 231st cruise on Crystal. From my conversations with my fellow passengers, it is clear Crystal Cruises has a very loyal following and I’m certainly not surprised.

The show this evening was called My Favorite Things. It was the best show I’ve seen in a long time. It featured songs from Rogers and Hammerstein musicals, all shows I saw on Broadway after the war. Of course the music was outstanding. Equally entertaining was the singing and dancing of the Crystal Ensemble of Singers and Dancers. The show ended with Shall We Dance from The King and I which is set in Siam (modern day Thailand). The elaborate costumes in this grand finale production number reminded me of the many times I traveled to Asia and my good fortune to have had a long career in the travel industry.

Tomorrow: Devil’s Island

When I walked out on Lido Deck 12 this morning on my way to breakfast, I saw the P&O Ventura at the other side of the dock. Seeing the P&O logo instantly brought back many happy memories of Atlantic crossings with my wife. On several occasions, we took a P&O ship from Acapulco to London via the Panama Canal.

Today was our first Virtuoso Voyager Club shore event of the 2010 Crystal World Cruise. Virtuoso On-Site Sunlinc Barbados provided us an exciting look at the island in the air-conditioned comfort of motor coaches. First stop was the historic St. John’s Parish Church set high on a hill overlooking the Atlantic side of the island. Clear skies and a pleasant breeze made this hilltop setting as cool and comfortable as it was picturesque.

On to St. Nicholas Abbey (it is actually a home believed to be the oldest building on the island) for a tour of the home and a glimpses of the lush gardens on the property. The current owner of the home has restored its sugar mill and now produces a very fine rum.

Soon after we arrived we were offered our choice of rum punch or fruit punch. I followed doctor’s orders and chose the fruit punch. Refreshing.

Our final stop was an exclusive lunch and entertainment at L’Acajou, the restaurant of the prestigious Sandy Lane Hotel, a Virtuoso property. The performers certainly created a Carnival atmosphere! From the open-air setting of this magnificent restaurant, we could watch the blue-green Caribbean Sea wash ashore while enjoying a Barbados delicacy, flying fish.

As we traveled between stops, our tour guide shared much information about Barbados’ history and culture, and we had the opportunity to see both sides of the island as well as the interior. A short tender ride brought us to the pier where Alison and Stewart with Barefoot Holidays were waiting for us.

After a brief visit with Alison, we were off on a driving tour of St. Lucia. Along the way, Stewart, our wonderful driver and guide for the day, stopped periodically to suggest a photo or introduce us to local favorites - coconut water, banana ketchup and cassava bread.

During our drive down the west (Caribbean) side of the island, I was delighted to see a number of familiar sights: acres of banana trees, the twin peaks of the Pitons, the town of Canaries, lush vegetation of the rain forest, and of course Marigot Bay.

As I stepped out onto the pier at Marigot Bay, my mind went back to the 1950’s when my yacht charter company operated from this secluded bay. I’ve always been fascinated by stories of ships hiding in the bay to escape detection by passing enemy vessels.

We thoroughly enjoyed a leisurely lunch at Ladera Resort as the guests of Ralph Hooper, owner, and his daughter Holly Scott. From the vantage of our table we had a spectacular view, and again I was reminded of my many pleasant visits to the island now so long ago. Ralph and Holly invited us to see the most unique suite on the property. As if the furniture which was handmade onsite by local artisans and the handcarved details and mosaic designs were not exciting enough, I was amazed to see the fourth wall, the one that would have faced the Western horizon, has been left completely open, allowing an open air, unobstructed view of the beautiful Pitons framing the Caribbean beyond.

Although of course there have been many changes during the years I have been away from St. Lucia, the beauty of this island nation and the hospitality of her people are as real and inviting as ever. St. Lucia has always held a special place in my heart because I began my travel career here. My return visit today was made all the more memorable by the warm welcome and full attention to every detail by Barefoot Holidays, a Virtuoso On-Site, and Ladera Resort, a member of the Virtuoso Hotel & Resorts program.

Tomorrow: Bridgetown, Barbados and our first Voyager Club excursion.

Day 4: At Sea

We entered calmer waters sometime overnight and the morning was bright and clear. Temperatures this afternoon were in the 80's. I found a channel on the television that tracks our journey and provides realtime statistics such as sea temperature, latitude and longitude, ship's speed, wave height, wind speed, and even the water temperatures of the two swimming pools.

Rita Moreno, star of movies and theater, gave a moving lecture today in the Galaxy Lounge. She spoke about her life story, shared some clips from her movies, and shared her passion for theater. Later in the day, she and her husband came to our Virtuoso Voyager Club cocktail party. More about that later.

I visited the spa today and thoroughly enjoyed a hot stones massage. Albert, my masseure, is a Cape Town native and has promised to tell me more about his hometown prior to our arrival there next month. In addition to massage, he is an aromatherapist, and I can tell he is dedicated to the well-being, and most of all, happiness, of his clients. This was my first time to experience a hot stone massage, and it was so relaxing I fell asleep.

This afternoon I was pleased to have the opportunity to extend an official Virtuoso welcome to our Voyager Club passengers during our cocktail party. Our first destination, St. Lucia, was the inspiration for my short welcome message. It was the home of my first foray into the travel industry, and it is the first stop on our voyage. Brian and Judy Robertson invited several of the onboard lecturers, all on the caliber of Rita Moreno and her husband, to join us and give us a taste of what they have in store for us during our days at sea.

In his remarks to the group, Brian Robertson gave the most concise insight into the origin and depth of meaning of our company name that I have ever heard. I had felt the ship moving quite a bit more this morning, and from my seat in the cafe I could see the cause - the sky was overcast horizon to horizon, the winds had picked up, and the sea had become choppy. Later in the afternoon we had a period of light rain. My greatest challenge today was finding my sea legs.

The morning Special Interest Lecturer was Brigadier General Nick Halley, U.S. Army, Retired. He spoke on the challenges our troops and our national leaders face in the Middle East with the confidence and conviction of a proven military leader. When he asked the veterans in the audience to stand, I was proud to join the many veterans who rose to their feet, and it was gratifying to hear the general's words of thanks on behalf of the American people. We spoke briefly after his lecture, and agreed that except for the Army/Navy game, we could root for the "other guys" on the gridiron field. He will be with the cruise until we arrive in Rio, and has a number of additional lectures scheduled.

Beyond question today's highlight was the evening show of Broadway vocalist Michel Bell. He sang everything from Nat King Cole selections to New Orleans-style jazz to Broadway hits from West Side Story and Man of La Mancha. He saved the best for last and gave a moving performance of "Ol' Man River" from Show Boat. I was tempted to return for the second show! "Ol' Man River" brought pleasant memories to mind of the times my wife and I rode the Mississippi Queen paddle boat up and down the river, from New Orleans to well beyond St. Louis.

Tomorrow is another day at sea.

Day 2: At Sea

Today was our first day at sea. I took the morning at a leisurely pace and lingered over coffee with the Virtuoso Voyage Club Hosts, Brian and Judy Robertson. Brian and I reminisced highlights of our longtime friendship, including our first cruise together 20 years ago from Hawaii to LA. Our first Voyager Club cocktail party is scheduled for Thursday evening, and for the first time I will meet the Virtuoso passengers - there are about 50 onboard - who have embarked on this World Cruise with us.

I spent the afternoon settling into my stateroom and resting. The Serenity's Chief Electrical Engineer joined my table for dinner this evening. He and I have similar maritime backgrounds, including training aboard submarines. I look forward to talking with him further, and he has already made plans to return for dinner several times in the weeks ahead.

After dinner I attended the Captain's Formal Reception, then on to the first musical show of the cruise, Million Dollar Musicals. It was an outstanding full production of movie musical moments, masterfully performed by the 8-member cast and 2 lead performers who make up The Crystal Ensemble of Singers and Dancers. As with everything Crystal Cruises does, it was planned, choreographed and executed with excellence in every detail. Don't ask me which number was my favorite - I enjoyed them all, including selections from Fidler on the Roof, A Chorus Line, Hello Dolly, and My Fair Lady.

We cross our first time zone tonight. Tomorrow is another day at sea.

The Crystal World Cruise is underway

I have been looking forward to this day for quite some time, and I was not disappointed. After a delightful overnight stay in a spacious suite at the Mandarin Oriental Miami, I awoke to a day of sunshine and clear skies, the perfect day to embark on a grand world cruise. At 1:00 PM I left the hotel in an SUV (I had too many bags to fit into a sedan) and headed to Terminal J at the Port of Miami. Although there were quite a few cruise ships in the port, I was able to spot the Serenity from quite a distance. The Crystal Cruises team executed their boarding process flawlessly, affording my fellow passengers and me a pleasant and almost effortless start on our journey.

I took a short rest in my stateroom and then made my way to the Crystal Deck (deck 5) for the launch party. It was a true celebration with music, dancing, champagne, balloon and a never-ending stream of confetti. Amongst all the confetti and balloons I met up with Brian and Judy Robertson, our Virtuoso Voyager Club hosts for the cruise.

My onboard assistant, Donna, and I had the good fortune to be seated at a window table for the late (8:30) dinner. Midway through our appetizers, I realized the ship was underway. It had quietly begun to ease forward. A pilot boat tracked our ship just outside the window for several minutes, then pulled away and we were headed to sea.

Tomorrow: a day at sea.

Embarking on the Crystal World Cruise

I have the privilege of being the honorary Virtuoso host for the Crystal World Cruise 2010.
